The calibre of players produced by the club from the early days included Geoff Gasper, Daryl Gerlach, Ross Abbey, Russell Muir, Bill Berry, Alan Eade, Mark Eustice and Michael Thompson. These players were very prominent in the then VFL. In recent times Glen Manton, Scott West, Ed Considine, Adam Contessa , Ty Zantuck, Lance Piccone and David Round are others in the spotlight. Another aspect of Strathmore that helped put the Mores on the Map is the striking gold and blue publication More News. Life members Grant “Mantis” Edmondson and Tony Smith founded the magazine in 1970. Advertisers use its columns freely and the More News has served a great purpose for publicising activities and news. History was again made at Lebanon Reserve in 1992 when the football club and cricket club were joined under the umbrella of the Strathmore Sports Club. Kelvin Thompson MLA officially opened the new club and social rooms on August 16, 1992. In 1997, Lebanon Reserve was re-named Syd McGain Oval in honour of the early pioneer who still has an active interest in our club.
After a nine-year drought, the Mores won the big A Grade flag in 1998 kicking right
away after half time for a hefty 62 point win against Keilor. A Reserves also showed
their dominance by winning yet another pennant. Ian Aitken coached the senior
side,
while the president was Chris Wheeler.
In 2003, the Strathmore Football Club celebrated its 50 Year Anniversary by naming
its Golden Jubilee Team. Great past players including Bugg, Files, Wensor, Ellis,
Corboy and Hille were named in the line up. Four time best and fairest winner
Brian Elvery was named Captain, Peter Owen named Coach and Club legend
Wally Abraham as Team Manager.
In 2005, the Mores won it's fifth A Grade Grand Final, defeating
Greenvale in one
of the greatest grand finals ever seen.
Tied at the end of regular time, goals to
Adam Winter and Glenn
Campbell secured victory for the Mores in extra time.
Strathmore great Craig Hille was coach, with Richard Little
captain. Adam Winter was judged best afield with his five goals
and dominant display across half forward. Grant Holman was
awarded the
Dick Renoylds medal for the best player in the
competition. The Under 18 side
bounced back from their 2004
grand final defeat to punish Oak
Park, running away with the
premiership to the tune of 12 goals.
Former Strathmore
great
Brendan Trebilcock was the victorious
coach and Boyd Morrall
skipper.
In 2006, another chapter was added to the Club's proud history, with the Senior A Grade Team winning its second successive premiership flag. It was the first time that the club had gone 'back to back'. The side went through the season losing only the one game and defeated a lacklustre Doutta Stars by 73 points in the Grand Final. Craig Hille was once again coach and Richard Little captain. Myles Quinn, recruited from Claremont was awarded the best on ground medal. Dale May capped off his terrific season winning the Dick Renoylds Medal for the EDFL Competition Best and Fairest whilst Full forward Tim Harvey was the first player in the clubs history to kick 100 goals in a season at senior level. He finished with 108 for the season. In the Junior ranks, our Under 10 Div 4 side took out the premiership, easily accounting for Aberfledie. Other highlights in 2006 was the terrific achievements of young gun Andrew Horne who represented the Under 18 Vic Metro side and was also awarded the TAC Cup Coaches Award and selection in the TAC Cup Team of the Year.
